A site mostly about the Red-tailed Hawks of Washington Square Park (NYC). The site’s header image is that of the current female Hawk ‘Sadie’ landing in the nest.
This site started as a blog documenting my discoveries around town and little did I know it’d eventually be all about the Washington Square Park Hawks! Roger was my cat and the blog name was a nod to his cute paws.
I first learned of the Red-tailed Hawks from this 2011 New York Times article (a great read that includes the history of the Hawk nest).
I started to watch the nest cam and soon started blogging about them.
I first went to the park to see the nest for myself a couple of days later and the rest is history!

Key dates and Hawk highlights:
June 23rd, 2011: Bobby and Violet’s sole offspring, Pip, fledges the nest. Pip is the first Hawk baby for Washington Square Park.
December 24th, 2011: Violet is rescued for assessment and possible surgery to her injured leg.
December 25th, 2011: Rosie, Bobby’s second mate, appears in the park for the first time.
December 29th, 2011: Violet dies from a heart attack upon waking from surgery.
September 15th, 2014: My last sighting of Rosie in the park. The reason for her disappearance is never confirmed (whether it was accidental, rodenticide poisoning, or other).
February 12th, 2015: Sadie, Bobby’s third and current mate, appears in the park for the first time.
May 9th, 2019: Bobby, the Hawk patriarch, is reported missing. Also on May 9th: Juno, Sadie’s apparent new mate, appears in the park.
June 5th, 2019: Juno, Sadie’s new male friend, spends extended time in the park.
