Bobby relaxing on Judson Memorial Church cross – September 6th, 2012

After four days of seeing no Washington Square Park Red-tailed Hawks, it was a joy to see Bobby tonight.

Going into a big stretch:

Getting the right spot:

Sunset deepened. Another stretch:

Nightfall:

I had been with him while he was perched on the cross for exactly an hour and a half before his flight.

I just missed photographing him trying to snatch a pigeon that was sitting on the side of a nearby building. I now know it was the pigeon he had been staring at just before flying off the cross.

Flying back toward the church while over Sullivan Street:

Tucked into a fast dive:

He landed on a lamp at the back of NYU’s Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies (at the corner of Washington Square South and Sullivan Street):

I found this good photo online of the Center to illustrate how close the building is to the church (photo credit goes to Jim Steinhart). The Center is the building on the corner:

Bobby flew off the lamp after one minute:

He flew around the front of the building and flew over Washington Square South (WSS) and out of view. I ran down Sullivan Street to the corner of WSS and looked for him but didn’t see him anywhere. I walked east along WSS and searched for him (even the NYU Shimkin nest ledge just in case) but I never saw him again before I headed home.
