Red-tailed Hawk landing on nest, Bobst Library, NYU, New York City

[Guest Post] Four Outta Five Hawks

I’m not Roger_Paw. Roger_Paw’s letting me show a few pictures of the Washington Square Park hawks that I took tonight. This post will look and sound a bit substandard. Oh well; you get what you pay for.

I searched for the third fledgling, hoping it might be in the Law School courtyard, but alas, no. I searched over to 6th Ave, along 4th St & 3rd St and all intersecting streets—trees, fire escapes, ledges, air conditioners. The score at the W 4th St basketball courts tournament was 23-22, but who’s got time to stop with an awol hawk? Anyway, all for naught.

This is the second fledgling, the one that was kicked out of the nest yesterday. It’s all alone on a tree on LaGuardia Place, maybe 50 yards south of the park.

It seemed well.

Meanwhile, the adults cavorting on the west side of the park.

Dozy kid. Rough couple of days.

Yet ever-vigilant.

Who knows what the world might bring next. One day you’re nice and cozy on a broad ledge with meals delivered.

Then everything changes.

The two adults are on a building on the west side of the park.

Circling, looking for footing.

A friendly WSP hawk photographer discovered a fledgling on the east side of the park. This water tower is on one of the rooftops where the first fledgling has been. This is almost certainly the first kid.

Still.

Stupid physics.

The first fledgling left the water tower and went down on a rooftop. The second fledgling seemed at last to find a comfortable branch to settle in on. The third fledgling is still unaccounted for. The adults disappeared and so did I.

  1. Thanks so much for the contribution. RO can’t always be there and hawk watching is certainly a team endeavor.

  2. Thank you for your input!! It’s been stressful not having an update, yet not as stressed as these young hawks may be!
Do we have no knowledge of what happened to the third fledgling? I assume the new male kicked her off the ledge as well. Was hoping to see video to understand what’s happened. Hopefully Roger_Paw will be able to shed some light.

  3. Observing the tender parenting skills of adult hawks as chicks emerge from eggs lulled us into a false sense of how the natural world works. Seeing the most tender attention of adult hawks as well as osprey parents (Dunrovin nest cam in Lolo Montana has 3 chicks) belies the fact that they respond to a whole range of instincts. Nest cams are fabulous inventions and now are affording us a larger scope of bird behavior–some of which seems cruel by our standards but might be perfectly normal in hawk land. Let’s not forget that come fall they are chasing their young away forever. Thanks again for all you are doing to keep us in the loop.
