Mating Hawks between snowfalls – March 3rd, 2019

We got some clear skies between snow showers so I grabbed my chance to check on the Hawks. I only had about an hour to spend Hawking in Washington Square Park today but there was lots to see in that brief time.

Pigeons and sparrows were eating bird seed that had been tossed on the sidewalk:

Either eating or drinking snow water:

I saw who looked like Sadie fly over the park less than 10 minutes later:

The Hawk’s markings looked like hers but I unfortunately didn’t get nice enough closeups to post.

She flew south of the park:

The snowman I first saw on February 21st with some newer snow around:

An Alaska Air National Guard C-17 Globemaster III was quite loud as it flew relatively low over the park:

“Dover”, the black and white pigeon I’ve become familiar with, flew with some of the pigeons then landed on one of the square’s lamps as he usually does:

Walking in the square before joining other pigeons not long after:

Bobby and Sadie met up atop the Con Edison tower:

Bobby flew off the tower, swooped around, then mated with Sadie:

Moving to separate perches:

I left with them looking quite well. It snowed a few hours after I had left.

  1. Just a question …
Do you know , Roger_Paw , where our hawks go in a lovely snow storm of/ blizzard conditions w/ wind, cold and snowfall? Do they just batten down the hatches under an eave or would they ever seek shelter in the nest…or is that reserved only for sitting on eggs and raising the hatchlings?
I enjoy the education you and Carlene offer ,about our hawks and other “flying wonders” in the park.
    Thank you .

    1. Hi! The Hawks have countless tuck-away spots on the buildings within their territory. I haven’t been out during a blizzard or really bad snow storm to check on them because it’s just such bad weather for me to be out in and and I know I won’t find them (they hide out really well). I’ve never seen them use the nest or nest ledge to hide from bad weather.

In heavy rain we’ll find Bobby sitting in a corner of one of the NYU building’s facades. It has a big overhang that shields him from the rain.

Other times he and his mate at the time will sit out in the rain to take a shower.
