Red-tailed Hawk landing on nest, Bobst Library, NYU, New York City

No Hawks August 20th, 2012

Despite spending a couple of hours after work yesterday and searching throughout two parks, I still have not seen a sign of any of the Washington Square Park Red-tailed Hawks.

I am a little worried for them but I’ve been trying to remain positive by reminding myself that there were stretches of time last summer when Bobby and Violet weren’t seen soon after Pip left the area. The last time I saw one of the Hawks was on August 13th, when Bobby was being dive-bombed by a Mockingbird.

I could be wrong but it seems to stand to reason that Bobby and Rosie are taking the opportunity to roam about and explore different areas of the city and beyond now that their parental duties are over for the season and will check in at Washington Square Park when the mood strikes. If they do plan on staying in Washington Square Park, we’ll see more and more of them within the next several weeks when their biological drives push them to start fortifying the nest and reestablishing their territory.

In the meantime I’ll continue to look for them regularly of course and will report any sighting I have or hear about.
