Red-tailed Hawk landing on nest, Bobst Library, NYU, New York City

Sadie brings new greenery to the nest – May 17th, 2018

We finally got a break from days of rain so I took my long-awaited chance to visit the Washington Square Park Hawks.

Bobby was on the old cross tower down the street from the nest:

Sadie would bob as if she were feeding the babies then look around every once in a while:

Sparrows were enjoying sand baths in the bocce court:

Sadie brought some pigeon bits out of the nest after about 25 minutes:

Bobby jumped into the nest:

Sadie brought the pigeon to the low buildings along the eastern side of the park as has been her routine.

She landed in the tree across from the nest 5 minutes later. It was good luck that I was standing near the tree at the time or I could have easily missed seeing her land there:

She went from branch to branch until she found just the right twig for the nest:

You can see Bobby’s tail feathers jutting out from the nest:

Sadie brought the twig to the nest bowl and then flew out of the nest a couple of minutes later:

She flew right to NYU’s Silver Center building:

I didn’t realize at the time that Bobby was sitting in his regular perch at the corner. I noticed him there after I was home and looking through my pictures:

I did see as he flew to the roof below the water tower. He spent a few seconds wiping up from a meal:

He flew further onto the roof then made his way closer to Sadie:

Sadie moved from the flag pole base to the railing:

The Hawks palled around like this on Silver for around 15 minutes until Bobby flew northward:

Sadie followed his path a few seconds later:

It was another 15 minutes until Bobby returned to Silver:

I stood around hoping to see Sadie return to the grounds or the nest but I wasn’t seeing her. She could have been anywhere really. Half an hour passed and Bobby flew north and then east out of sight.

I left the park after another 15 minutes of waiting for Sadie and wouldn’t you know I was a block south of the park when I turned around to see her freshly perched on the flag pole Bobby was on earlier:

I couldn’t stick around but felt relieved to see her back home.
