Hawk dazzle and German marching bands – September 20th, 2019

I was a few blocks south of Washington Square Park when up ahead I saw a Red-tailed Hawk fly from one of our Hawks’ regular building terraces.

Its outstretched wings dazzled in the sunlight. I assembled my camera and lens to capture the magnificent bird and of course it flew away as soon as I was ready. I never did find it or any other Hawks over the next two hours of searching.

My visit wasn’t a waste though because there were several talented costumed marching bands playing and some nice birds relaxing all around the park.

A band organizer announced that they were members of tomorrow’s Steuben Parade and that they comprised of American, German, and Austrian musicians. They were in the park for a rehearsal and kickoff event.

Their parade will start tomorrow at noon at 5th Avenue and 78th Street. Here are links with the parade info and its origins.

I was there when they played the Austrian, German, and American national anthems. They also played the Cancan which was pretty surprising but fun.

I wandered around a bit and spotted this handsome guy having a relaxing sun on an eastern lawn:

Sparrows were tucked into a bush, busily preening:
