Juno Hawk’s hopscotching – October 19th, 2019

I watched Juno (Sadie Hawk’s new mate) as he hopscotched on a few perches over the course of a half hour today. The last time I saw the Red-tailed Hawks was on October 1st so seeing Juno today was a real treat.

I spotted some migrating birds in Washington Square Park at the start of my outing.

Ruby-crowned Kinglet:

Golden-crowned Kinglet:

These birds were part of a group of about five Kinglets flying among a cluster of evergreens.

I saw that a new cross was atop the old Judson Memorial Church tower:

I don’t know how long the new cross has been up but I watched the old one getting removed on December 21st, 2017.

There was no Hawk action the first hour of searching so I traveled northeast to Union Square Park. I saw Juno sitting at the base of the Con Edison tower as soon as I reached 14th Street.

There had been no Hawks on the tower every time I checked it while I was in Washington Square.

Juno relaxed for 11 minutes before darting off and flying southwest:

I spent the next several minutes walking southwest and scanning all around for him. I was pretty happy to find him sitting on a water tower perch overlooking University Place. This was the view as I stood on Broadway:

The view from University Place:

I could only see him through a narrow gap between buildings.

Juno flew off 14 minutes after I first spotted him up there:

He landed on the roof edge just across the street from him. He immediately ventured into the rooftop garden and out of sight.

This was the view of the garden with no Hawk to be seen anymore:

I waited around to see if he’d fly out soon but I gave up after about 25 minutes. It was pretty cool to see his perches though. He is still a new Hawk for me so discovering his perches is extremely interesting. I will have to check these locations every time now to see if they are his regular hangouts.

  1. That little “Kinglet” made my day. As you searched for the mighty RTH , you did not miss the little
“tree ornament”…he appears as a glass holiday ornament of the season.
    Thanks, Roger-paw.

  2. Juno is looking good! Have there been any recent Sadie sightings? I’ve seen Kinglets in real life but didn’t have a camera on me that would take such nice pictures. You’re right; they are tiny and beautiful.
