Red-tailed Hawk landing on nest, Bobst Library, NYU, New York City

Sadie and Juno on Broadway – January 1st, 2020

I had been looking for the Hawks in Washington Square Park for an hour when I spotted one of them on the distant Con Edison tower:

I had checked the tower earlier but no Hawk had been there the first time.

I started walking north on Broadway and toward the tower when all of a sudden I followed the urge to turn around and look behind me for the other Hawk.

It was at that moment when Juno, the new male Hawk, crossed Broadway behind me and continued eastward. I love it when that happens!

I didn’t see a Hawk on top of the Con Ed tower anymore anyway so I went to look for where Juno might have gone.

I found him sitting on top of the Astor Place Tower:

It was lucky timing too because he dove off then circled to a new, hidden spot on the other side of the roof.

I found a vantage point where I could see him again.

He ran across the roof a few feet at one point:

Little birds started to gather on a terrace below him 15 minutes later.

He looked down at them then dove toward them:

He didn’t bother with them though.

He straightened out then flew across the street, landing on a hidden spot on the Wanamaker Building:

He was somewhere behind the featureless block in the center:

Sadie had obviously spied him though. She flew over his area then landed on a nearby roof section:

She sat for 5 minutes then swooped around and behind the Astor Place Tower:

She then caught up with Juno who now had a bird in his talons!

Juno in front:

Sadie followed him north then south as they flew above Broadway:

Juno flying south with his catch:

I found this image online (taken by “Norbeto N”) that shows the buildings from my last four photos above. This pic was taken from exactly where I was standing when I took my pictures today:

I thought Juno might have flown to Washington Square Park so I headed back over there. I was wrong though; I guess he took his prey to a ‘table top’ just east of the park.

I was leaving the park when who should step in front of me? It was Dover, the park pigeon I’ve become a fan of:

Walking in my direction:

Finding some food beneath a bench:

    Thank you for this blog.
    Happy New Year

    1. Ah but there have been countless times when I’ve turned to have a look behind me and seen no Hawks; this was one of those happy occasions when I did! 🙂 Happy New Year, Janie!
