[Video] First egg of 2020 for Washington Square Park Hawks – March 17th, 2020

Sadie laid her first egg of 2020 today. This is a first also because this is her first brood with her new mate Juno (who is so named because he arrived on the scene in a big way last June).

I don’t know the exact time she laid her egg but I first caught a glimpse of it at 4:27PM while I was watching the live nest cam. If you happen to know when she laid the egg please let me know in the comments below!

This is footage that I recorded of her incubating, rolling the egg, and of Juno visiting her (a couple of times with food). It was great to see Juno bring her food so quickly. He may turn out to be an excellent provider like her previous mate Bobby.

Sadie should lay another egg every day or every other day. She usually lays 3 eggs each season.

  1. Thanks, Dianne! I did pass through the park (cameraless) I think around 2:30PM if I recall correctly and Juno was on the cross and Sadie on the base of a distant water tower so 4PM sounds about right.

  2. Ah…confirmation that life indeed goes on.
Juno appeared to be on alert w/ the surroundings of the nest…he seemed to assume a near protective pose between the window and Sadie w/ the new egg.
From a “sheltered in place” on the west coast, this news warms and cheers my spirit!
Congratulations to our new hawk family.
Thanks Roger_Paw for this snap of life in Washington Park.

  3. This really is exciting news. We know Sadie is the perfect Mom. It’ll be interesting to see if Juno is a good Dad. He seems to be taking the job seriously, feeding Sadie and “cleaning” the nest. Here’s to a good year.

  4. If you can get the video of 7:10 this morning for just a few minutes, the interaction on nest change is so interesting!
    Happy nest time!

  5. Here’s to life and rebirth!! How reassuring during these times of dread and fear. I so appreciate your sharing this miracle, being there as a link to a place of normalcy. The little hawk family is going about their lives oblivious to the invisible risk in the air which humans are facing.

  6. Egg! Wonderful news. Thanks for the video. Have you any idea of Juno’s age? Could he be a first-time father? Grateful for this post, especially with the possibility of the city going on lockdown. Stay well!

    1. I would only be guessing but my hunch is that Juno is a first-time father. I figure he is a bit young considering his youthful demeanor. Bobby was much more stoic and mature. Thanks, Peggy!

  7. This is the first good news of the day! Thank you so much for posting this, and for the link to the nest camera. We all need something to think about besides the ongoing crisis in the world. Good to be reminded that life goes on.
