Red-tailed Hawk landing on nest, Bobst Library, NYU, New York City

Juno minds the park. Other birds delight – February 20th, 2020

Today’s visit to Washington Square Park started like it did yesterday with a Red-tailed Hawk atop the distant Con Edison tower:

And the Hawk disappeared from the tower the moment I wasn’t looking, just like yesterday.

I was walking around and about to pass a bench when I inadvertantly disturbed the pigeon I’ve nicknamed Dover from a nap. Sorry, buddy!

He took a couple of steps then stretched:

Juno appeared. He circled above the park before landing on the One Fifth Avenue apartment building:

Dover took off and joined other pigeons who were getting fed on the east side:

Juno coming in and sticking his landing:

Walking along the roof from one end to the other:

Picking his talons clean:

It was after he had relaxed a bit when I noticed he had a full crop so he must have eaten recently. He settled down and digested:

Dover flew past and landed on a globe lamp in the park square:

Juno did a lot of flying around then landed on the flag pole just east of the nest.

He was on the pole for 3 minutes before he started to cry.

The sound was chirpy and beckoning in a way.

Juno flew off and darted toward his target (Sadie?):

I never did see Sadie during my visit. Juno returned to the park but I lost him behind some buildings.

I was exiting the area through Sasaki Garden (one block south of the park) when I spotted a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk on the southern apartment building:

It was resting but alert:

  1. Great Pics, Roger_Paw
I wonder if Dover feels camouflaged in her seat on the globe lighting…matches her white ensemble and other “family members” do seem to drop by for a visit.

  2. I guess learning about the other park residents’ habits is fun for us and perhaps survival for the neighbors
You wouldn’t want to sit next to someone who loves Dover meat…especially if you are Dover.
