Red-tailed Hawk landing on nest, Bobst Library, NYU, New York City

Both Hawks visit the nest – February 19th, 2020

I was a few blocks outside Washington Square Park when I spotted one of the Red-tailed Hawks circling east of the park.

The Hawk was gone by the time I reached the park grounds but there was a Hawk on the distant Con Edison tower top:

I don’t know which Hawk it was on the tower. I’d check in on it every few seconds. But of course it disappeared during a moment when I was looking around for the other Hawk.

Suddenly Juno flew overhead, crossed over the park square, then headed west:

He might have been the Hawk on the tower because when I looked at the tower again that Hawk was gone.

Close to 10 minutes passed. Juno reappeared, flying over the park square again.

He headed right to the nest:

Sadie then appeared, flying over the square. She followed Juno into the nest:

Juno flew out of the nest not long after. He circled in front of and above the nest building (NYU’s Bobst Library):

He landed on the flag pole just east of the nest:

Meanwhile, Sadie sat on the nest ledge and peered out over the park.

Juno flew off the flag pole and eventually made his way north out of the park.

You can just see him flying to the right of the park arch:

Sadie flew out of the nest after 11 minutes:

She landed on the Silver Center roof railing (overlooking the park from the east):

She circled above the eastern buildings then disappeared northeast.

The breeding season’s starting to heat up. I hope to see some mating before Sadie lays eggs this year. That is if she does lay eggs anyway. Fingers crossed!

  1. Come on, little hawk family, everyone is hoping w/ fingers crossed for a little nest full of eggs and eventual “chiclets” hatching.
