[Updated with pics] She’s back! Dora, the Tompkins Square Park female Hawk, has been released back into her park! – February 26th, 2018

I just read on Goggla’s site that Dora has recovered from her extended rehabilitation for a wing injury and is back in Tompkins Square Park. Details and pics will be forthcoming so be sure to check back on her site when the details come in. I’ll also update this post with the update once I see it.

The male Hawk Christo has mated/attempted to mate with the new female Nora the first weekend of February so it will be fascinating to see what happens next (if Dora will drive Nora away from the park); especially if Nora is pregnant.

9:25PM Update! Here is Goggla’s post of Dora’s return to the park (including video footage).

I was curious to see how things were going in Tompkins Square Park so my better half and I arrived around 4:30PM and first found Dora in the newer nest by the northern border of the park:

Fledgling gets in a jam, is rescued and released! – June 16th, 2016

The Washington Square Park Hawk fledgling got trapped in an NYU building early this morning. A fellow Hawk-watcher saw it all happen.

The fledgling managed to crawl under some netting at an NYU building balcony. It was not able to find its way back out and got stuck.

So my friend alerted me, NYU security, and a Park Ranger who helps with Hawk rescues about the problem. I called Bobby Horvath of WINORR (Wildlife in Need of Rescue and Rehabilitation) and he was immediately on the case. He headed over from Long Island to come to the park and rescue the fledgling.

The rescue and release went off pretty much without a hitch. If it hadn’t been for the devoted Hawk-watcher and one particular NYU security officer who went the extra mile to help, no one would have known what to do to help the Hawk so thank goodness for them!

I rushed over to the park and waited with my friend for Bobby Horvath to arrive.

Release of a female Hawk in Washington Square Park – January 13th, 2015

Since Rosie hasn’t been seen in Washington Square Park for months (I personally have not seen her since September 15th), it has been fair to surmise that she may not ever return.

Whether she has passed away or found a new mate elsewhere is anyone’s guess. Of course I and everyone I know hopes there’s still a chance she’ll return but the odds of that happening becomes increasingly slimmer.

Bobby is quite the eligible bachelor now and I’ve been hoping to see a new female in the park so that they might have a brood this spring but so far there have been no visiting females.

As luck would have it, the Horvaths of WINORR (Wildlife in Need of Rescue and Rehabilitation) had been taking care of an injured city female Red-tailed Hawk the last few weeks.

She was ready to be released back into the city today and Washington Square Park looked like a great option on several levels; she would be released back into her familiar environs (the city) and there would be no harm in seeing if perhaps she and Bobby might take a liking to each other. And if Rosie was indeed still around and drove her out of the park, there’d be no harm in that either.

And so it was that with great care she was released into the park today:
