Central Park Hummingbird and Pale Male – September 3rd, 2012

Birding in Central Park today afforded some special sights; Orioles, Warblers of all sorts, Redstarts, a Cedar Waxwing, etc. But the surprise delight was a Ruby-throated Hummingbird:

After a few hours, my friend and I went to check in on Pale Male.

The nest through a break in the trees:

My friend spotted Pale Male on an apartment building just south of the nest (second level down, third window from the left):

He sat for a few minutes before flying away without warning. I heard from another Pale Male watcher in the park that that is typical of him; he will fly away with little warning. I had become so accustomed with Bobby’s and Rosie’s “tells” that warn me they are about to fly. Pale Male’s behavior was new and surprising for me.
