Red-tailed Hawk landing on nest, Bobst Library, NYU, New York City

Hawky autumn Saturday – November 5th, 2016

A man was setting up a fine Christmas-themed balloon display in Washington Square Park this morning:

A Cooper’s Hawk circled above the park for a few minutes, making one of the pigeon flocks a bit nervous:

It disappeared high and south of the park.

A juvenile Red-tailed Hawk showed up 3 minutes later and did some fine circling as well:

It tucked its wings in and dove far west and out of sight:

A couple of park regulars let me and a fellow Hawk-watcher know that they saw three Hawks in the park yesterday. They could have been our two adults and a visitor.

It’s fall migration time so we may see more migrants over the next couple of weeks.
