As Tompkins Square Hawk-watcher Goggla shares in this post, there is at least one baby in the Red-tailed Hawk nest. Check out her post for pics. The egg may have hatched around May 25th.
The baby is the first for new couple Christo and Amelia (his third mate this season).
Dora, his original mate, was first rescued for care for her injured wing on December 5th. A new female, Nora, took up with Christo during Dora’s absence.
Dora was returned to the park on February 26th and apparently chased Nora out of the park and reestablished herself in Tompkins Square.
One of Dora’s wings got injured and she had to be rescued for care again, on April 4th. Dora’s carrier wasn’t even in the rehabilitator’s car when yet another new female, Amelia, was seen in the nest and Christo went over to her and mated with her.
It sounds very dramatic but so it goes in Hawk land in the heat of breeding season.
Best of luck to the new couple!
What an active community!
Thanks for the update and w/o the notification, I would not have known about Dora and Christo…
hank you, Roger.
You’re welcome! It’s encouraging that there were so many females vying for Christo’s companionship. The city has so many more raptors passing through/trying to establish than we can imagine.
