A fellow Hawk-watcher saw one of the Washington Square Hawks perching on one of the park flag poles for a long while this morning. It flew off its perch mere seconds before I turned a corner to catch my own view of the Hawk.
The Hawk disappeared and it wasn’t until about 20 minutes later when I spotted one of the Hawks (Sadie) fly over the park trees then right up 5th Avenue:
She flew directly to the Cardozo Law school building on 5th Avenue and 12th Street. This building is popular with the Washington Square Hawks. I saw both of the Hawks on this building on August 12th and several times over the last few years.
Bobby flew right by her and then circled just west of her and 5th Avenue:
Sadie spent the next 2 hours and 25 minutes preening, relaxing, and stretching on her perch:
Bobby would show up from time to time and fly close above her:
Peeking her head out:
One of her feathers floated down and traveled across 5th Avenue and to a lower rooftop a block north of her:
A CycloMedia car (similar to a Google Earth car) traveled down 5th Avenue:
The sophisticated rooftop camera equipment:
Sadie moved along to the other side of her perch:
She would stand alert and look like she was going to fly but they were false alarms:
Stretch:
She did finally fly, zipping eastward:
I looked for her but didn’t see her again. It was great to see the Hawks today because I visited on the 23rd and didn’t see either of them.
Gorgeous…the Hawks and your pictures, Roger_ Paw.
The hawks appear healthy and the red tail is so vibrant and colorful.
In the last picture, you nearly caught a full reflection in the window.
Thanks for your efforts in showing us dear Bobby and Sadie enjoying their neighborhood from so high in the sky.
Thank you! The Hawks do look like they’re doing quite well which is always a relief. That window reflection was a happy surprise.
That feather had quite a journey and you were there with your camera to share the story with us. You keep finding new ways to make me smile 🙂 Loved it!
I’m glad you liked it. I had to ‘leave my post’ and risk missing Sadie fly away as I walked up the Avenue to photograph where the feather was going to wind up. It was fun.
No sightings of the fledglings? How are they doing?
Hi, no – the fledglings appear to be gone for good now and starting their young lives out in the big world. The fledglings leave the park around this time every year.
Oh I love the feather suite of photos. I’d love to have one of Sadie’s feathers. In the past I’ve tried to save bird feathers, but of course they disintegrate over time unless treated, but I don’t know how to do that. Sadie’s tail is gorgeous, really beautiful as shown so perfectly in your photos. Thanks so much.
Thank you! She really is very pretty. She’s molting now and displaying a lot more red all over than usual (as far as I can recall). I hope to get closer shots of her soon but she’s often perched so high up!
Oh my goodness, I loved the feather sequence!!! Just like in Forrest Gump.
Your photographs are lovely. I enjoy them so much. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Diane! I’m glad to hear it. Have a good night!
