Nest visit! Sadie and Juno take a sun bath – November 9th, 2019

I was right outside Washington Square Park when all of a sudden Sadie flew past me and right into the nest!

It was the first time I’ve seen her visit the nest this autumn. Her visit was especially exciting because it confirms that she has not abandoned her old nest despite the possibility that her new mate Juno could have lured her to a new nesting location.

She flew out of the nest 3 minutes later:

It’s worth checking on the live nest cam from now on for future visits. The Hawks will bring new twigs to the nest and reform the nest bowl up until Sadie lays her eggs next spring.

Sadie flew from the nest to the neighboring building’s roof top (NYU’s Kimmel Center):

I stepped back enough to then see that she was sitting next to Juno! He is on the left in the photo below:

They chatted a bit:

Watching her wipe her beak clean on the building:

They spent 20 minutes preening and otherwise looking around while being basked in the bright morning sun.

Juno flew west before rising high above to circle several times above the park:

His right wing’s new feather has grown in quite well:

Sadie stretched then flew off the building 2 minutes after he did:

She flew around the eastern NYU buildings then over the park before she too circled high above:

Juno was long gone by this point. Sadie then flew far south and out of view. It was a great load of action to start my day!

  1. Hopefully, reclaiming the Nest of Memories” for all of us.
Somehow, for me, this will help heal the loss of Bobby and celebrate the new family.
    Thanks,Roger_Paw.

  2. Quite the size difference between Juno and Sadie. I mean, I know female hawks are a little larger than males but wow. Maybe Juno is a lot younger than her or something. Cool seeing her go to the nest. This is a good sign!

  3. It feels bittersweet to see the nest is still in use by Sadie. Hopefully next spring Juno will prove to be a good provider to both Sadie and whatever babies they have.
