Red-tailed Hawk landing on nest, Bobst Library, NYU, New York City

Hawk mating and a rain water drink – March 13th, 2020

Sadie was the first Washington Square Park Red-tailed Hawk I saw today.

She was sitting on one of the eastern NYU flags:

She jumped off her perch after 4 minutes. She flew over the park square then made her way to the southwestern corner building:

Hello:

Juno arrived about 10 minutes later. He flew right to Sadie:

Juno left Sadie’s side after a couple of minutes:

He flew over the trees then landed on Two Fifth Avenue (an apartment building along the northern border of the park).

He sat for 7 minutes then charged at a flying pigeon flock but didn’t catch any of the birds:

Continuing southward away from the park:

Sadie eyed the rain gutter below her then stepped down into it. It had rained all morning so I was hoping she’d take a bath but she had a few drinks instead:

She walked around the corner and spent a little while longer in the gutter:

She flew away when I happened to take my eyes off her.

20 minutes passed before I saw the Hawks again.

They both circled a few blocks north of the park:

They flew eastward but I couldn’t find them.

  1. I enjoy seeing the “Love Birds” and it helps me view Juno as the “new guy” in the nest.
In frame 10, it would appear, Juno does a gymnastic flip …after mating his Sadie…Ahhhhh
    Someone is Happy!
