Red-tailed Hawk landing on nest, Bobst Library, NYU, New York City

Rain, rain, go away. No hawks seen in WSP August 3, 2011

It was raining and drizzling then raining again in NYC this evening and although a friend and I searched for hawks around Washington Square Park and the surrounding streets for an hour, we came up dry.

Not seeing any birds was not surprising though. They were probably tucked nice and dry under a water tower or building awning as we dodged our random curbside puddles.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is a high of 80 with mostly sunny skies. Perfect! Here’s to hoping tomorrow will bring lots of great sights!

Update on Violet

Andy Newman of the New York Times asked me and other birders for our thoughts on Violet’s whereabouts and to confirm when her last known sighting was. I know Violet’s whereabouts have been a concern for many of you so I’m happy to share what Andy compiled in his online post here:https://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/03/hawk-cam-wheres-violet/I’ve refrained from discussing Violet’s whereabouts until Andy compiled his piece and published it. The article should serve as some comfort to know that Violet is not “missing” but simply living her life elsewhere for now. It would be great to see her again soon but I for one am not too worried about her but wishing her well wherever she may be at the moment.

No hawk sightings August 2nd

Bobby and Pip were seen around Washington Square Park August 1st (a day I was not at the park) but they were not to be found when I and a couple of other hawk-watchers searched the park and the area on the 2nd. We were there for about two hours but no luck. No hawks were seen during a brief walk around Union Square Park as well. Not to worry, they could have been anywhere around that swath of Manhattan.

In the meantime, here’s a screen shot flashback of little Pip relaxing after a rain shower. Image is of a screen shot I took on June 7th, 2011 (a couple of weeks before she fledged).
