Red-tailed Hawk landing on nest, Bobst Library, NYU, New York City

Rosie and Bobby’s high-rise Sunday – March 4th, 2012

Bobby was on Judson Memorial Church when I first got to Washington Square Park today. Reports are that he and Rosie copulated on the cross earlier in the day and spent time in the nest. They’d been seen copulating just about every day. Since there isn’t a 24-hour hawk-watching presence in park, it’s safe to assume they’ve been copulating more than we know.

Rosie and Bobby’s active Saturday – March 3rd, 2012

I approached Washington Square Park from the east today. I saw Rosie flying into the Bobst Library nest from three blocks away.

As I arrived at the intersection of East 4th Street and Broadway, the surprising but unmistakeable shape of a Red-tailed Hawk flew north on Broadway. It was Bobby. It was shocking but exciting to see him near me while so far away from the park.

He soon flew from the north back to my direction and landed on a tall apartment building’s roof equipment:

Red-tailed Hawk Sandwich – March 2nd, 2012

It was a lucky day for me. My day started and ended with Red-tailed Hawk sightings. I was sandwiched between them!

My day started with the sight of one of the Southeastern Central Park hawks and my day ended with Bobby and Rosie hawk inside Washington Square Park.

Thankfully, red-tails are creatures of habit and like to generally perch in the same regular area. One of the Central Park red-tails seems to like perching on the Bergdorf Goodman Mens Store on Fifth Avenue and 58th Street (across from the main store) in the mornings. I had seen what I suspect was the same hawk a couple of days before.

While walking east on 57th Street, I saw one of the hawks sitting on a terrace railing (the dark figure silhouetted against the sky on the left):
