Both Tompkins Square Park Hawk babies have fledged

Goggla has accounts of the first fledge that happened on July 13th and the second fledge of the 17th. She’ll post regular updates on her site.

Congrats to papa Christo and new mama Amelia!

There are several devoted Tompkins Square Hawk-watchers who have looked after their Hawk family since the beginning so there’s little doubt they will be on hand to alert the appropriate Parks Department staff/wildlife rehabilitators should any of the fledglings get caught in a jam.

The Tompkins Square Park Hawks are good neighbors of the Washington Square Park Hawks. A few years ago I watched one of the WSP adults fly parallel with one of the TSP Hawks for several seconds as they both flew south along Bowery (a seemingly understood boundary between territories).

The boundary has typically been TSP Hawk territory east of Bowery, WSP territory west of Bowery.

There was no ‘quarrel’ between the two Hawks on that day but it looked like the Tompkins Square Hawk was ‘reminding’ Bobby of the boundary because he at first flew just east of Bowery and into TSP territory. They flew alongside each other then veered off back to their respective territories.

  1. Thanks for the shout-out! And great job documenting the lives of the WSP hawk family. I’ve really been enjoying your posts. 🙂
