I am sorry to share WINORR‘s update that the fledgling who was recently rescued and treated for rodenticide poisoning passed away this morning.
Thanks to Kris for commenting in my last post about the fledgling and updating me with the news.
A beautiful tribute to the fledgling and a relayed message from WINORR can be found in this post on Goggla’s site.
Such a sad loss.
It’s heartbreaking and terrible. And totally avoidable which is all the more frustrating.
So sad. What are the alternatives to rodenticide? Are adults susceptible, too? I don’t live in the city. (And we use a cat.)
Washington Square Park uses a combination of snap traps and dry ice to smother rats in their burrows. Adult Hawks are absolutely susceptible to rodenticide. It is a little bit of comfort that the WSP adults eat a lot of pigeons and also vermin from WSP. But they do eat rats outside the park on occasion.
People like you and Kris and Cathy and Bobby are still here to give us hope! The rest of us really need it!
Thanks for your support, Shelly.
This is disgusting. I thought rodenticide was not being used anymore where hawks have been nesting, and I’m wrong. This little hawk died for no good reason.
There isn’t rodenticide set out in the parks when Hawks are nesting but neighboring buildings continue to use it.
Any preventable loss of life leaves us all a little sad.
If this can become AGAIN a teaching moment , all will not be lost
Hopefully, the little fledgling was euthanized , rather than left to progress through the inevitable and painful stages of the poisoning.
Thanks ,Roger, for keeping us informed w/ good news and the infrequent hopelessness of a loss of life of a little hawk ,created and hatched to soar the skies and bring us more happiness w/ a nest and family of his own in a later year.
