Cooper’s Hawk in Washington Square – December 29th, 2018

I visited Washington Square Park today during a notoriously slow time Hawk-wise (when the Hawks are usually active outside the park grounds) so I was not surprised to see limited action. A Cooper’s Hawk had the run of the park while the Hawks were away. I saw who I think was Sadie Hawk a few blocks north of the park toward the end of my visit.

The bubble man was treating the kids to huge bubbles:

The Cooper’s Hawk flew right over my head when I was on a lawn. At first I thought it was a pigeon until I realized its flying style and tail feathers were quite different. It dove at the pigeons that were sitting atop the park arch.

Darting above the park square:

The Cooper’s Hawk in the center, disorganized pigeons all around:

The Cooper’s Hawk even soared above the Hawks’ usual perch (One Fifth Avenue):

One of the Red-tailed Hawks was slowly soaring a few blocks up on Fifth Avenue. It was floating and hovering in a thermal:

The Hawk slowly descended to the buildings. I couldn’t see where it went because of the park trees.

I went north to search for the Hawks but couldn’t find them so I returned to the park.

We got to 50 degrees today and the park square was packed!

The Cooper’s Hawk disappeared too so I left after a while.

  1. How wonderful , to see so many people enjoying the warmer weather.

Loved seeing the hawks and thank you for the previous posting about dear Violet
I remember those sad days and being stunned w/ the “what happened” of that experience. I could read and reminisce about it again , at this date , w/ a little more objectivity. I remember Bobby ,shortly thereafter, finding Rosie and life began anew for our hawks.
