One Hawk baby for Washington Square? – May 14th, 2016

I saw both Washington Square Park Hawk adults and one Hawk baby in the nest today. It appears there’s only been one baby hatched from the three eggs this season which is quite unfortunate.I haven’t seen more than one little Hawk so far and neither have my fellow Hawk-watchers who visit on my ‘days off’. I was holding off on mentioning this until I had had another chance to observe the nest (I’d only seen the one baby once before and was holding out hope that the others may have been sleeping at the time). However the little Hawk looks to be doing quite well so far.

Bobby flew from flag pole to flag pole at the start of my visit today:

A hatch and Bobby looking over his family – April 23rd, 2016

The Washington Square Park Hawk brooding season is going smoothly so far. An egg is confirmed hatched as of yesterday and I’ve received word that there are three eggs in the nest. Fledge time and Hawk baby observing time will be a handful this summer.

Since the Hawks’ eggs usually hatch one a day, all three eggs should be hatched by early next week.

I visited the park this morning during its rainy period. There wasn’t much action apart from Bobby watching over his family, flying to the nest to check on them, landing in a tree below the nest, circling above the library and park square, then traveling northeast from the park.

Sadie stayed low in the nest bowl the whole time I visited. A fellow Hawk-watcher saw her stand tall in the nest and look over her brood earlier in the morning.

Only two of the 3 Washington Square Park Hawk eggs hatched – May 11th, 2015

I just received confirmation from NYU that only two of the eggs hatched. The two little Hawks that did hatch are doing well. The two eggs were confirmed hatched April 27th so at this rate it would appear the third egg will not.

I watched as Bobby hunted and brought a pigeon to the nest this morning. Sadie then fed the babes (although I think I only saw one of the babies’ heads peeking up from the nest).

I’ll be posting photos of my visit later this evening but wanted to share the egg news now (2:15PM).
