Merry Christmas, everyone! My better half and I checked on the Washington Square Park Hawks today since we were in town and wanted to see how the birds were faring.
I saw Bobby atop the One Fifth Avenue apartment building as soon as we arrived.
Bobby was soaking up some rays:
Bobby relaxed and preened for 9 minutes before jumping off and flying southeast over the trees and out of the park:
I checked the Con Ed building tower a few minutes later and saw who was most likely Sadie perched there:
She was gone from her perch when I checked the tower again 15 minutes later.
Neither Hawk was showing up so we left the park after about an hour-long visit.
Some Christmas ornaments placed on a few of the trees outside one of the play grounds:
The ornaments were suspended on the lowest branches so I think children may have placed them on the trees.
Wonderful seeing the ornaments from the innocent children hanging in the trees
Nothing more simple and w/o guile ,than children, the animals and hawks in the park
Peaceful, isn’t it. Certainly , restores my soul on a Christmas Day.
I agree. It is such a nice treat to see such innocent sweetness out of the blue like that.
Merry Christmas!! At this lovely time of year perhaps all of us hawk lovers should remember Violet who passed away December 29, 2011. I still have photos of her that night in the park, with Bobby Horvath and Roger_Paw of course. Despite everyone’s efforts she died from cardiac arrest after being captured for treatment. She was the mother of Pip and Bobby of course was his father. Violet died in the company of people who gave her warmth and comfort, food and medicine, people who cared deeply about her welfare and shared a profound love of these magnificent red-tailed hawks. Happy New Year everyone!!
Thank you, Carlene for that beautiful remembrance. Violet will remembered dearly by all of us forever.
For anyone new to the story, here is a link to the post documenting her rescue and of her passing.
